27 Feb Keeping your transactions safe and secure. ID verification process.
Here at HRJ Foreman Laws Solicitors we take the security of your personal and financial information seriously. When you work with us, we are required by law to verify your identity for any transaction between us.
To enhance our security and provide a faster and more efficient verification process, we are now working with Thirdfort, an established company that specialises in secure onboarding for law firms in the UK.
Why we do ID checks
As well as ID verification we are also required by law (the law Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations) to verify source of funds. This helps to prevent financial crime, such as money laundering, which can have a devastating impact on individuals and society. In an article by Thirdfort, it states that “…. according to Europol, a staggering 41% of criminal networks use property transactions to launder their illicit gains…”
By partnering with Thirdfort, the process is much quicker, and it means we can get started on your legal needs sooner. The technology it uses will ensure the authenticity of your documents and identify information. You can complete the entire verification process from the comfort of your own home using a smartphone, iPad, or tablet.
There’s no need to worry about preparing copies and posting them or making a special journey to our office to drop them off with us. To get started you will just need to download the Thirdfort app. If you don’t have a device that permits you to download the app, you can use a trusted friend or family member’s device with their permission.
The specific tasks you’ll need to complete through the app will vary depending on your transaction. However, the main checks include:
- ID verification – This involves securely scanning or taking photos of your government-issued ID (passport, driver’s license, residence permit, or national ID card) along with a brief video recording of your face to confirm your identity.
- Source of funds questionnaire – You’ll be asked to explain the origin of the funds you’re using for the transaction, including any gifts you may be receiving. You can also upload supporting documentation like a mortgage offer or payslip to further verify the source.
- Bank statements – Using secure open banking technology, you can directly share read-only digital statements from your bank account(s) where the transaction funds are originating. Alternatively, you can upload PDF statements.
- Proof of address – Upload a recent utility bill (electricity, gas, water), council tax bill, or bank statement (within the last 3 months) displaying your current address.
- Proof of ownership (if applicable) – For property transactions, you may be required to upload two documents demonstrating ownership, such as utility bills, bank statements, mortgage statements, insurance policy schedules, property purchase agreements, etc.
We understand that security might seem like an extra step, but it’s a crucial one that helps protect you and your financial transactions. It also ensures a smooth and secure process for everyone involved.
You will receive more guidance on how to complete the process when you instruct us for legal advice.
