5 tips to agreeing Christmas contact

As we prepare for the holiday period ahead, we are only too aware of the stress it can bring for some families who have the added job of agreeing child arrangements.

Read on for our top five tips to agreeing Christmas contact for your children.

1. Focus on the children

The Court’s paramount concern is the wellbeing of the child/children. Therefore, all decisions should be child focused considering what is in their best interests. This can at times be difficult when parents’ judgement is at times clouded by the acrimony in the adult relationship

2. Think about it from your children’s perspective

The impact of the separation and the effects that follow are likely to cause your child/children some disruption. To make the situation easier for them, avoid conflict between the parents in front of the children.

3. Compromise and plan ahead

Whilst you may be used to set routines or family traditions, it is important to compromise to ensure that the children are not affected by unnecessary conflict. Make plans well in advance to ensure that come Christmas, the children have a clear idea of where they will be and whom they will be spending time with.

4. Communication

It is important to have a clear communication between the parents. All arrangements should be agreed and discussed by the parents, and then once agreed communicated to the children. This avoids miscommunication and the children feeling that they are caught in the middle or that they are a go between.

5. Stick to the agreement

Once an agreement has been reached, stick to it as this builds trust, routine, and stability not just for the child/children but also for the parents.
